A man stole $11,000 from a East Village church last Sunday while Mass was underway, police said.
The suspect snuck into the rectory of the Immaculate Conception Church on East 14th Street around 1:15 p.m. with a group of people following a Sunday Mass, police said.
Breaking away from the group, the man got to the second floor of the rectory where surveillance footage released by police shows him trying to open doors before disappearing to the third floor.
There, the alleged thief got into a bedroom and stole $11,000 in cash from a nightstand. The money was reportedly being held for a Nigerian bishop, temporarily kept at the church for safekeeping.
Police describe the suspect as light-skinned, wearing a black baseball hat, red T-shirt, brown shorts and white sneakers.
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online or text 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577.
