A massive new mixed-use development has been proposed for the parking lot in front of the TD Garden on Causeway Street where the old Boston Garden once stood.

Boston Properties and Boston Garden Development Corporation filed a letter of intent with the Boston Redevelopment Authority on Wednesday for the project that is so far referred to as The Boston Garden.

The project will be 1.7 million-square-feet and will include a new entrance to the TD Garden and North Station. It calls for up to 300,000 square feet of multi-story retail space, 500 residential units, 200 hotel rooms, 600,000 square feet of commercial office space and 800 parking spaces in an underground garage.

The joint venture between Boston Properties and Delaware North Companies, which is company run by the Jacobs family that owns the Boston Bruins and the TD Garden, is anticipated to break ground in early 2014.

The 2.8-acre parcel is currently used as a parking lot for players and VIPs before events and games at the TD Garden.

The developers said in their letter that they will now begin a large project review process and submit an expanded project notification form in the future.
