MBTA, hackers unite: Techies take on the T

Two years ago, the MBTA wasn’t so happy with MIT hackers for using Charlie Card information. On Friday, Jan 29, they’re joining together to streamline rider information.

The MBTA Data Hackathon will bring phone and Web application developers to the MIT Center for Future Civic Media to compete on the best apps for T-transit. Chris Dempsey, one of the conference’s organizers, hopes the conference will encourage innovation in communication.

“We’re working on a strategy to give customers as much information as they want,” Dempsey said. “We want transit information to be as easy to find as weather information.”

In November, MassDOT released real-time data to developers and have seen at least eight applications developed, including text messaging and phone apps.
