Commuters seeking to get home by the MBTA’s Red Line on Thursday night experienced massive delays due to a suspicious package at a downtown station.

Service was resuming as of 4:45 p.m. after police cleared the item and deemed the station to be safe; however, the MBTA warned that “severe” delays would continue.

Transit Police and other agencies were called at about 3:30 p.m. because of a suspicious item at the Park Street station, Transit Police said. Boston police and other emergency personnel also assisted.

The stoppage of service during the evening rush hour meant thousands of commuters are forced to find other ways to their destination. The MBTA said shuttle buses replaced service between the Kendall and Broadway stations while police investigated the item.
