Fans of questionable yet delicious pork sandwiches got a taste of reality Tuesday when a Boston man tweeted McDonalds of Eastern New England asking where he can find a local McRib.
"Our apologies @chriswillrocku, but the McRib will not be available in the Boston area this year. Sorry for the inconvenience," the fast-food chain responded.
This year, McDonalds opted to remove the sandwich from its national menu, leaving it up to local franchises to decide whether to offer it. McDonalds has not yet responded to questions about the sandwich's future availability in Boston.
"The McRib is especially difficult to track down this year," said Alan Klein, who in 2008 launched the McRib Locator so people could report sightings of the elusive sandwich. "The past few years we were spoiled with the nationwide releases that allowed fans to find it at most locations, at slightly different schedules."
Klein contends that the McRib has a cult following because of its taste, and limited availability.
"For years it was teased the given year would be the end of the McRib. As fans didn't want this to happen, and if it did didn't want to miss out on their last chance to get one, they would run out to get one," he said. "Additionally in recent years, the McRib is a throwback for some fans. It seems the ability to get these throwback items is a popular trend."
Nicole DiNoia, McDonalds Communications Manager in the Boston Region said in an emailed statement that the "McRib is not a permanent menu option on the Eastern New England McDonald’s menu, and while it will be offered in other areas of the US, it will not be available in our area this year," however gave no indication as to when the sandwich will make its triumphant return to Boston.
