Mayor Thomas Menino is less formally known as “Tommy Menino from Hyde Park,” but for the past three months he has lived about as far away from his home as you can get without leaving the city.
Now it looks like Menino is finally heading home.
During an interview Tuesday, Menino said that he hopes to soon leave the Parkman House on Beacon Hill and return to his more modest Hyde Park home this weekend.
“Do I want to leave there, pal,” Menino said with a sigh during a interview with WFXT. “I can’t wait .. I hope by this weekend we’ll be there.”
Menino has been living at the official residence of the mayor of Boston since Dec. 23 when he was released from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He spent about four weeks there after dealing with several illnesses that cut short a vacation to Italy last year. He continues to have daily physical therapy sessions as he tries to regain strength in his legs, he said.
Menino was admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Oct. 26 after returning from a vacation with his wife in Italy. Doctors said he had a blood clot and a virus. During his stay at the hospital, he also suffered a compression fracture in his vertebrae. Doctors also diagnosed him with Type 2 diabetes.
Work is being done on Menino’s home, he also said. “We started a very small project so we have more access to the facilities,” he said.
Renovations are being made to his home’s bathrooms, according to the Globe. New fixtures and grab bars, which can help with balance, are being added.
Some who work for the city have questioned whether Menino’s health issues were actually worse than what was revealed. When asked by the WFXT anchor if he had a stroke, Menino said he didn’t. He was also pressed on whether he would seek re-election this fall, but did not say whether he would run again.
