Despite a political race featuring a Congressman from Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino said today that he will not endorse a candidate in the upcoming special democratic primary to replace former Sen. John Kerry.

Menino told WBZ 1030 that he does not plan to endorse either U.S. Rep Ed Markey of Malden or U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch of South Boston ahead of the April 30 primary.

“I will not be endorsing anyone in this campaign at this time or in the future,” Menino said. “Both are friends, both are good candidates.”

An endorsement from Menino has proven beneficial for candidates in contested races not only because of the publicity, but also because of the backing of Menino’s powerful get-out-the-vote machine.

Both Markey and Lynch are veterans of the Massachusetts congressional delegation, but Markey has the lead in recent polls.

A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll released last week showed Markey with a 29-point lead over Lynch.
