A hate crime targeting one neighborhood in Middleboro has left a town stunned.
Several residents of the Lane Street, Warren and West End avenues area woke to find racist terms spray painted on their homes and vehicles over the weekend, the Brockton Enterprise reported. The graffiti included swastikas and obscenities.
Lt. Robert D. Ferreira Jr. told the Brockton Enterprise that the defaced homes and cars appear to have been chosen randomly and no specific people or families were targeted. Most believe the work was done by area kids looking to cause trouble.
“I just think people are upset. We think it was probably kids having what they consider a good time. But they don’t understand that it’s going to take some work to get that off the house,” Sharon Sherman, whose home was vandalized, told the Enterprise. “I think it’s a group of kids just being stupid."
In addition to the obscenities, bizarre statements like "I like children in bed" were also painted onto homes.
Police say one first name was mentioned in the graffiti, but there are no leads. Anyone with information is asked to call 508-946-1212.
