Here are the MTA’s subway, bus and rail road holiday schedules

Declaring the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is the “best way to travel” during the holidays, the MTA issued subway, bus and rail road schedules ahead of Christmas and New Year’s.

Subway

Tues., Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Operates on regular weekday schedule.

Wed., Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Operates on a Sunday schedule.

Tues., Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Operates on weekday schedules.

Before the ball drops: Customers should avoid using 42-St.-Times Square subway complex ahead of the celebration. Northbound platform at 50th Street 1 Train and southbound platforms of 49th St. NQR will be closed from 7 p.m. until after midnight. MTA urges riders to exit at 57th St. or 59th St. Columbus Circle and walk to Times Square.

After the ball drops: Subway trains for lines in and around Times Square will run every 8 to 12 minutes until 3 a.m. 42nd St. S will operate all night.

Wed., Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)

Operates on Sunday schedule.

Bus

Tues., Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Operates on weekday schedules with minor timing changes, except for Staten Island buses. (Limited bus routes S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96 and S98 will run local.) Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens X express buses will operate on weekday schedules with minor timing changes.

Wed., Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Operates on a Sunday schedule.

Tues., Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Operates on weekday schedules (with same limitations as Dec. 24).

Before the ball drops: Buses aren’t recommended for traveling to Times Square.

After the ball drops: Regular overnight bus service resumes in area as streets open after midnight.

Wed., Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)

Operates on Sunday schedule but with loner waits at some bus stops.

Long Island Rail Road

Tues., Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Extra afternoon trains.

Wed., Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Operates on a special holiday schedule, see timetables.

Tues., Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Modified weekday schedule with extra service to New York City in evening and extra service from the city after midnight.

Wed., Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)

Operates on a special holiday schedule, see timetables.

Metro-North Rail Road

Tues., Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Extra afternoon trains.

Wed., Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Operates on a special holiday schedule, see timetables.

Sat. Dec. 28

Special services for the Rutgers vs. Notre Dame college football game at Yankee Stadium. Shuttle between Grand central, Harlem 125th St. and Yankees-153rd St. stations.

Tues., Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Modified weekday schedule with extra service to New York City in evening and extra service from the city after midnight. Reduced service during traditional rush-hour periods.

Wed., Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)

Operates on a special holiday schedule, see timetables.

Staten Island Rail Road

Tues., Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Extra afternoon trains, from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Wed., Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Operates on a Sunday schedule.

Tues., Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Operates on regular weekday schedule.

Wed., Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)

Operates on a Sunday schedule.
