New Yorkers have until July 15 to vote for their favorite green app created at a city-organized “sustainability hackathon.”
Over 100 developers, programmers and designers gathered last weekend at NYU-Poly in Downtown Brooklyn, where they used city datasets – such as tree surveys and climate change projections – in order to produce environmentally related digital tools and applications.
A panel of judges then selected winners for five different categories: recycling, transportation, parks and public spaces, city crowdsourcing and “judges pick.”
An overall winner will now be chosen by the public via Facebook. In order to vote, visit http://on.nyc.gov/votegreenapps.
Currently in first place is an app that allows users to locate the nearest recycling cans.
Another app lets users see how green their neighborhood is in terms of energy consumption and trees planted.
The other three apps respectively list bike commuters so that people can ride together, unwanted curbside items in an effort keep them out of landfills and fresh products from local farmers’ markets.
“Creating a greener, greater New York requires the involvement of all residents,” said David Bragdon, director of the Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. “The apps developed [last] weekend will tap into New Yorkers’ interest in living more sustainably.”
