U.S. senators from New York Chuck Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand endorsed Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio for mayor.
Gillibrand told de Blasio supporters in an email Sunday that de Blasio is a "true progressive champion." She specifically noted his plan to launch universal prekindergarten in the email.
"Join me in helping Bill move us forward on education and so much more," she said, adding, "We all need to get behind Bill today."
Schumer said in a statement Friday that de Blasio would be able to decrease economic inequality.
"New York needs big, bold ideas to meet the challenges before us, and a laser focus on making sure the economic pie is shared more equitably with all New Yorkers," Schumer said, adding he will help him make his "objectives become reality."
De Blasio said he was honored for "fellow Brooklynite" Schumer's endorsement.
"At a time when working New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet, Sen. Schumer has never forgotten that a strong and vibrant economy is based on a growing middle class," de Blasio said in a statement. "I'm proud to stand with him."
De Blasio has also recently been endorsed by both former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
