A new Associated Press report says the NYPD has been designating mosques as terrorist organizations for years in order to justify spying on them.
This designation has reportedly allowed surveillance to continue without any specific proof of criminal wrongdoing.
The operations are known as "terrorism enterprise investigations" and at least a dozen of them have been carried out since 9/11.
They can operate for years without any charges, the AP reported. In fact, the NYPD has never formally leveled charges against a mosque or Islamic organization.
The operations are reportedly so invasive that federal law enforcement officials told the AP the FBI has never conducted anything like them.
