NYPD officer shot in Brooklyn, shooter at large

PO Sarwar, Jamil 75 Pct

An NYPD officer was shot in the leg inside a Brooklyn housing complex on Thursday night, police said.

Jamil Sarwar took a bullet in his right thigh at about 10:45 p.m. in the Cypress Hills Houses, police said. He remains in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital.

Police officers stationed inside a TerraHawk observation tower in front of 1200 Sutter Ave. had observed an individual shooting another individual and transmitted the incident of their department radio, police said.

Sarwar and another officer were responding to the call when they heard additional shots and ran inside 365 Fountain Ave. for cover. When they got inside, Sarwar realized that he had been shot.

A search for the shooter within the housing complex yielded negative results, police said. The suspect was unknown and still at large early Friday morning.

It is believed that the shooter fired his weapon from a Fountain Avenue rooftop, according to police.
