A New York University student died in an apparent suicide Monday morning, plummeting from a dorm in the East Village, officials said.

The 19-year-old freshman dropped into an interior courtyard at the 15-story Third North Residence Hall near East 11th Street about 3:20 a.m., police and university officials said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police believe the man jumped from the building, but the incident remains under investigation.

The university expressed its sympathies to the family and friends of the teen in a statement.

“It is with great sorrow that we report that a freshman was found in an interior courtyard in the residence hall where he lived,” NYU spokesman John Beckman said. “It appears as though his death occurred as a result of a fall; police and the university are looking into events preceding the discovery of the body in order to determine the cause and nature of his death.”

Beckman said crisis counselors were at the dorm since the incident and that their presence would continue.

Monday is the first day of spring 2014 classes for NYU students.

In November 2009, a student jumped to his death in NYU’s Bobst Library.

Two other public suicides took place at the library in 2003, leading school officials to install protective panels.

In 2012, the clear panels were upgraded to aluminum screens, completely blocking the library’s atrium where the jumpers died.
