Off-duty cop fires weapon in Center City

A Philadelphia Housing Authority officer fired his weapon after a 23-year-old man attempted to hit him with his car in Center City early Sunday morning, police said.

A Philadelphia Housing Authority officer fired his gun at a 23-year-old man who attempted to run him over in Center City early Sunday morning, police said.

The officer, who was not named , said a black man driving a2012 white Dodge Charger pulled out a gun and pointed it at him after the officer honked his horn in an attempt to force the driver to move his vehicle around 1:43 a.m. on the 500 block of South 8th Street, police said.

The officer told police he then drew his weapon and identified himself as an officer. The 23-year-old man then jumped into his car and drove at the officer, who jumped out of the way and fired at the driver's windshield.

The officer tracked down police stationed at 8th and South Streets who caught the suspect on the600 block of Bainbridge Street. A gun was found in the driver-side-door pocket. Policesaidthe driver did not have a license to carry the firearm.

Police also took the officer's gun for further investigation.

No injuries were reported.
