Officer shoots, kills suspect after high-speed chase

A Boston police officer fatally shot a man who led police on a high-speed chase from Boston to Rockland yesterday.

Police started pursuing the man about 10:30 a.m. when they saw a woman, a passenger in the suspect’s car, get hit as she tried to get out of the car on Blue Hill Avenue, police said.

Mark McMullen, 44, of South Boston fled to the highway and down Route 3 leading police on a nearly 20-mile chase that reached speeds of about 80 mph.

A cop shot McMullen when the chase ended at an off ramp of Exit 14.

“He aggressively attempted to evade capture and struck at least one police cruiser,” said Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz.

Two Boston police officers were taken to a hospital for stress-related injuries. The officer who shot McMullen was also not identified as of press time.

A state trooper was also treated for an injury as well as a Rockland police officer who lost control of his cruiser on the way to the pursuit.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said he believed the chase may have been called off just before it ended, but that would be part of the investigation.

He said supervisors call off pursuits based primarily on the seriousness of the offense.

The incident was not the only harrowing situation involving Boston police yesterday.

Officers were shot at by a man on Slayton Way in Roxbury. There were no reports of injuries, and that man was arrested.
