One person died and nearly a dozen others were taken to a hospital after a hazardous materials incident at a Plymouth school.

Local authorities responded to the Manomet Elementary School Monday morning and called in the Hazardous Materials Response Team from the state fire marshal’s office.

A school custodian working in the building died, according to the state fire marshal’s office. The custodian was identified Monday afternoon by authorities as 53-year-old Chester Flattery of Plymouth.

An autopsy was planned as authorities continue work to identify the chemical involved.

It is not clear if the death was connected to work being done on the building. Officials said chemical readings in the building were very low.

Eleven other people, including 10 public safety personnel and another school employee, were taken to a local hospital for possible chemical exposure and minor throat and eye irritation. As a result, the building was evacuated while the state’s hazmat team was called in.

Most of those people taken to the hospital were treated and released.

It was not made clear by press time what chemical may have been involved in the incident. Analysis was being conducted and authorities are investigating.
