A paraglider from Rhode Island died after a mishap while out in Newburyport on Saturday sent him crashing into the frigid water.

The Coast Guard said that just before 5 p.m. a person reported that a parachutist had crashed into the water off of Plum Island. A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Merrimack River immediately launched, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The lifeboat crew was able to pull the man out of the water and take him to an ambulance.

At the time of the incident, the air temperature was 28 degrees and the water temperature was 38 degrees, the Coast Guard said.

Police said the paraglider, a 49-year-old from Rhode Island, died about 90 minutes after the call for help, according to the Newburyport Daily News.
