Cheerleaders, the famed South Philadelphia adult cabaret that hosts the annual “Wing Bowl,” recently won a bid to upgrade their status as a club to a place where dancers can bare their breasts freely.
The city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment ruled on Wednesday that breasts can be exposed, although g-strings will still be required, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Club owners John Meehan and Frank Antico Jr. sought the change to compete with other strip clubs in the city.
Their Philadelphia club is located at 2740 Front St., just south of Oregon Avenue. They also own a Cheerleaders in Pittsburgh.
The Philadelphia club was previously zoned “commercial” under old city zoning rules that allowed for modified adult entertainment uses. Now it will be zoned as a full-fledged adult cabaret. There was reportedly no opposition to the change.
Philly Cheerleaders must pay for and receive a new permit from the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections before topless dancers can legally perform at the club.
Cheerleaders Philly has been open for 18 years.
