Gov. Corbett requested resignation of education secretary

The state's secretary of education submitted his resignation today after it was requested by Gov. Tom Corbett, the governor's office announced today.

William E. Harner, 56, served as secretary for only two months. He took office on June 1.

Harner, a Carlisle resident,previously served five years as superintendent for the Cumberland Valley School District in Mechanicsburg.He is a 1974 graduate of Cheltenham High School in Montgomery County.

Carolyn C. Dumaresq, the department’s executive deputy secretary, will serve as acting secretary of education, effective immediately, according to a news release.

Dumaresq, of Harrisburg,formerly served as superintendent at Central Dauphin and Steelton-Highspire school districts.

She earned her master’s degree from Villanova University and her doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania.
