A group of Lower East Side residents are fed up with pizza.
A petition on Change.org is seeking to convince members of Community Board 3 to institute a ban on new pizzerias in the neighborhood they say has become over-saturated with restaurants specializing in the greasy, classic New York delicacy.
The petition, created by a group that goes by the name “No More L.E.S. Pizzerias!” states its mission thus: “Promote diversity in low to mid-priced food options for New York City’s Lower East Side.”
A longtime Lower East Side resident who is behind the campaign told the East Village blogEV Grievethe group’spreferred food options would be “More small local joints likeMimi & Coco’s Japanese spot.”
Some media coverage previously indicated that the group’s crusade was against dollar-slice pizza joints, prompting them to clarify with an update to the petition: “It is not an anti $1 slice pizza petition. We’re sick ofALLnew pizzerias. No more new $1 slice pizzerias. No more new expensive brick oven pizzerias.NO MORE PIZZERIAS!”
As of Sunday, the petition had 38 signatures.
