Philly groups rake in $8.8M on Kickstarter

Philadelphia is ripe with small groups that have been successful in online crowd-funding using the popular Kickstarter platform.

Philadelphia is ripe with small groups that have been successful in online crowd-funding using the popular Kickstarter platform.

More than $8.8 million has been raised in Philadelphia alone on Kickstarter, the website announced today.

Some of those groups include Pizza Brain in Fishtown, the world's first pizza museum, which raised $16,587 from 326 backers.

Their next-door neighbor, Little Baby's Ice Cream, raised $6,314 from 151 funders using Kickstarter.

The Philadelphia Film Society's effort to restore the Roxy Theatre raised $47,776 from 479 different people using Kickstarter.

Any nonprofit can create a fundraising page on Kickstarter and use the site's glossy interface to get online donations.
