A Philadelphia man was charged today by federal prosecutors in Colorado with providing money to a designated terrorist organization, the Department of Justice announced.
Bakhtiyor Jumaev, 45, was taken into custody this morning by members of the Philadelphia FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. He is charged by the District of Colorado with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a Designated Foreign Terrorism Organization, specifically the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU).
Authorities have been investigating Jumaev and his associate, Jamshid Muhtorov, who was arrested in January 2012 on similar charges. Jumaev and Muhtorov allegedly pledged support for the IJU and Jumaev allegedly sent funds to Muhtorov, specifically intended for the IJU.
The IJU is an extremist organization that is said to be responsible for a number of attacks and bombings, including attacks against Coalition forces in Afghanistan. The U.S. Secretary of State has designated the IJU as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Jumaev was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. He faces a detention hearing on March 20 and will remain in custody until then. If convicted, Jumaev faces up to 15 years in prison.
