New York State is one of a handful of places in the U.S. where it is legal for woman to be topless in public.

On Sunday, protesters gathered in Midtown to exercise that right, and to spread awareness about what they call “gender topless equality” – the right for woman to be topless where men can.

“It’s stupid that woman can get jailed for showing their nipples, everybody has them,” said Karen Heaven, spokeswoman for Go-Topless, an organization based in Seattle, as she marched shirtless today.

About a dozen women in all marched topless in the protest, which started in Bryant Park, and migrated through Times Square. The marchers garnered encouragement — as well as catcalls — along the way, as they chanted “Free your breasts! Free your mind!”
