Police-involved shooting in West Philadelphia, victim in critical condition

A 28-year-old man is in critical condition today after he was shot by police during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia Saturday night, police said.

A 28-year-old man is in critical condition today after he was shot by police during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia Saturday night, police said.

The man, of the 1200 block of St. Bernard Street, was shot on the 5400 block of Media Street around 11:30 p.m. afterofficers pulled over a 2000 Chevrolet Caprice for a traffic violation at Media and Conestoga Streets, police said.

The car was occupied by the driver, passenger and the 28-year-old man in the back. Police said the shooting victim provided false information to police, and when pressed by police on the issue, attempted to flee the scene.

The officers grabbed the man and a struggle brought the three to the ground. Police said the man overpowered one officer and attempted to remove the gun from the officer's holster.The officer yelled the situation to his partner, who drew his weapon and fired at the attacker. The attacker was shot once in the stomach, according to the police report.

The man then got up and attempted again to flee before he was caught and secured a short distance away. The man was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he remains listed in critical condition, according to police.

The two police officers suffered superficial wounds but refused medical treatment, police said.

Internal affairs is investigating the shooting, and the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney's office.Both officers were placed on administrative duty and will remain there pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to police the shooting victim has a five previous arrests. Twice he was caught for narcotics and for violation of the Uniform Firearms Act. He was also detained for carrying a weapon on school property. He was also wanted by police for a probation violation related to a robbery.
