Police in Merrimac are searching for a man who went missing earlier this week.

The Merrimac Police Department is looking for Edward Casazza Jr.,49, of Westbrook, Maine. According to the Newburyport Daily News, Casazza disappeared in the area of Merrimac Town Forest.

Authorities began searching the wooded area Thursday on four-wheelers in the hopes of finding Casazza, whose 2008 Toyota Corolla was found outside the Sweetsir School parking lot off Church Street.

Police began their investigation in and around the school, and then decided to widen their search into the town forest.

Merrimac Police Chief Eric Shears told the Daily News that Casazza is familiar with the area because he grew up in town and still has several connections to the community. However, it has not yet been determined why Casazza's vehicle was parked at Sweetsir School.

The Merrimac Police Department said in a statement that they are being assisted by the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, Massachusetts State Police, environmental police and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Anyone with information regarding Casazza is asked to contact the Merrimac Police Department at 978-346-8321.
