Possible shark attack on Cape Cod being investigated

A man who said he was bitten by a shark while swimming on Cape Cod yesterday was transported to a Boston hospital overnight.

The unidentified man was swimming at Ballston Beach in Truro about 4:30 p.m. yesterday when he was bitten on his leg and ankle, according to the Cape Cod Times.

As the man was being carried to an ambulance he gave a thumbs up to a reporter, according to the Times.

Officials have not confirmed the man was bitten by a shark, but witnesses reported seeing a shark fin in the water before and during the time the man suffered his injuries.

State officials are investigating today whether the man was bitten by a shark, according to the Globe.

Ballston Beach was open today, but with warnings posted.

Shark sightings have become the norm in recent years on the Cape as they have been attracted to seals that also visit there during the summer months.

The last fatal shark attack in Massachusetts occurred in 1936 near Cape Cod.
