Convicted mob boss and murderer James “Whitey” Bulger “richly deserves” to spend the rest of his life in jail, prosecutors wrote in a scathing sentencing memorandum.
The government’s sentencing memorandum was filed on Thursday and asks a judge to sentence Bulger to life in prison. Bulger’s sentencing is scheduled for next week.
“James ‘Whitey’ Bulger is one of the most violent and despicable criminals in Boston history,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Kelley wrote in the court document.
Kelly points out in the memorandum that Bulger’s convictions on multiple counts result in a sentencing guideline of life in prison and that there is no lower level. He also requests that Judge Denise Casper sentence Bulger to a second consecutive life sentence for his conviction for possession of machine guns and another five year sentence for his conviction of possession of firearms.
“There are no mitigating factors, and the defendant Bulger has no redeeming qualities, which would justify any sentence below the one called for the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the applicable case law and statutes,” Kelly wrote.
Bulger was found guilty earlier this year of multiple charges, but a jury found that the government could not prove that he was involved in eight of the accused murders.
Kelly also wrote that Casper should order financial restitution for the families of Bulger’s murder victims and that prosecutors will file more documents relating to that within the next week.
Bulger’s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13 at federal court in South Boston where he and victim’s families will likely get to speak.
