Psychiatrist attacked with sledgehammer, knife

A man wielding a sledgehammer and a knife reportedly went on the attack Monday morning inside of a psychiatrist’s 12th-floor Midtown Manhattan office.

Police said they arrested Jacob Nolan, 20, and charged him with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Nolan used his sledgehammer first and then his knife against the psychiatrist, according to an NYPD spokesman.

But the psychiatrist, identified in news reports as Dr. Michael Weiss, was apparently able to wrest the knife from Nolan and stab back.

Though no one is likely to die, both men were taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

Weiss, whose office is located on West 57th Street near Columbus Circle, says on his website that he has operated his own practice for the past decade.

The Daily News reported that Nolan’s cousin is Weiss’ ex-girlfriend and the mother of Weiss’ child.
