Queens lays out battle plan for ‘war on pigeon poop’

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer announces new anti-pigeon measures Thursday. Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer announces new anti-pigeon measures Wednesday.

Sunnyside and Woodside residents joined Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer at a press conference Wednesday to end the neighborhoods’ pigeon poop problem.

Van Bramer announced a $250,000 pigeon mitigation system to be installed along the 7 train line from 46th to 61st streets, which is overrun with the pesky birds.

Residents struggle with trying to avoid falling feces as they wait for their train, which is both a nuisance and a health risk.

“Today we have officially kicked off our war on pigeon poop within 26th district,” said Van Bramer. “Pigeon poop isn’t a joke. It makes our neighborhood look unattractive and it is also a health hazard.”

The mitigation systems will include thin wiring, spiked ledges and high-pitched noises only audible by pigeons to keep them from swarming the stations.
