Days after a man allegedly broke into a woman’s bedroom on East 90th Street and raped her, city statistics show that sexual assaults are increasing in several uptown precincts.
Police arrested Jason Quinones, 21, on Sunday, saying he broke through a ground-floor window and raped the woman.
“Possibly perpetrators are getting bolder,” said Lauren Moran, coordinator of Mount Sinai’s Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner program.
She noted their numbers are higher this year — eight victims this July compared to six last year — and that summer is riskier.
“You generally are going to see a lot more assaults,” she said. “People are out more.”
The Upper East Side’s 19th precinct, which spans north of 67 Street, reported nine rapes as of Aug. 7. Last year there were six. And in the farther north 23rd precinct, which starts at 96th Street, 18 rapes so far also reflect a 50 percent increase from last year’s 12.
On the Upper West Side, the two precincts adjacent to the park each reported eight rapes — one more than last year’s seven.
Susan Xenarios at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital said their crime victims’ center saw 19 rape victims in the last two weeks, a number she called “very significant.”
“Things like this happen in waves,” she told Metro. “There’s a lot of violence against women and children right now, and I haven’t figured out why.”
The Upper East Side is still reeling from a serial groper, who cops said they arrested last week.
Advocates say the increase might be more victims reporting — or more confident criminals. “This groper just had no boundaries at all,”?Moran said.
