Three alligators were turned in and no questions were asked on Saturday at the Suffolk County SPCA’s first amnesty day for illegal reptiles and amphibians.
The alligators, which measured between three to 4.5 feet, were not the only cold-blooded pets released into the SPCA’s care, the Daily News reports. A boa constrictor, several tortoises and a turtle were also handed over.
Illegal pets have been a problem in Long Island, where nine alligators were found last fall.
“They do not make good pets,” SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. “There’s a reason why they’re illegal. Stick to your cats and dogs.”
