School bus drivers’ union will strike on Wednesday

Local 1181, the school bus drivers’ union, announced that they will strike on Wednesday.

Spokesman Michael Cordiello called Mayor Bloomberg “disingenuous” for his assertion that including job guarantees for current drivers in the new bids for contracts is illegal.

Bloomberg and the Department of Education have previously said they are legally unable to include an Employee Protection Provision based on a Court of
Appeals ruling regarding a recent request for bids on pre-kindergarten
bus routes.

The city has several plans in place to help parents get their children to school, including supplying MetroCards and reimbursement for the cost of gas, car services, or taxis.

The contracts in question are for bus routes specifically for disabled students from kindergarten through 12th grade, but all 7,700 bus routes in the citywide system will be affected.
