A second suspect has been arrested for the brutal beating of a 64-year-old Vietnam veteran on the 5000 block of North 5th Street in Olney last Tuesday evening.
A police spokeswoman said that the 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody around 5 p.m. yesterday.
The first suspect, also 15, was arrested around 9 p.m. Thursday and arraigned Friday on charges of attempted murder, assault, conspiracy and related offenses, police said.
Investigators were initially searching for a group of six teens for their complicity in the attack based on surveillance video footage, but later found that they were actually two groups of kids who exchanged greetings as they passed each other.
Authorities also believed that three teens participated in the attack, but after speaking with witnesses and reviewing one of the suspect's confession, they determined that the third teen who appeared to pile on top of the victim in the video was actually trying to pull his friends off of the man, Lt. McClay of Northwest Detectives said Friday.
While the attack was initially thought to be random, it seems to have been initially motivated by robbery – the victim's cell phone, which he was using at the time of the attack, was allegedly stolen, according to police.
