Senate rejects gay marriage

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was deeply disappointed by the state Senate’s 38-to-24 defeat of the same-sex marriage bill yesterday.

In a serious setback for its proponents, all 30 Republicans and 8 Democrats voted against the bill.

Tom Duane, the first openly gay state senator, who represents Manhattan’s West Side, sponsored the bill. The marriage equality bill has passed the state Assembly three times. Gov. David Paterson and other supporters had fought to get the bill onto the Senate floor in order to put legislators’ positions on the record.

“At least we now know where individual legislators stand,” said Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, the Senate did approve a $2.8 billion deficit reduction plan yesterday, which Paterson says still does not prevent New York from running out of cash.
