After raw sewage was discharged into the Hudson River overnight, the city has issued a recreational water body advisory for the Hudson and East rivers through 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Recreational users, including those in boats and kayaks, are asked to avoid contact with the Hudson between the George Washington Bridge through Lower Manhattan and the East River north to the Manhattan Bridge.
An electrical issue caused Harlem's North River Wastewater Treatment Plant to discharge the sewage. The Department of Environmental Protection took steps to disinfect the water discharged from the plant using bleach, but swimming downtown is not advised through Tuesday afternoon.
The department will continue to sample water along both rivers, working with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Public beaches were not expected to be impacted by the sewage discharge.
An extreme heat warning is also in effect for Tuesday.
