State Police are warning incoming students to be mindful of their surroundings when traveling through Boston alone at night after another alleged sexual attack on the Esplanade occurred Sunday.
“It’s always a concern. In a couple of weeks, we will see an influx in thousands of college students so we ask that all new residents be aware of some safety measures,” said State Police spokesman David Procopio.
According to police reports, a man told Boston University Police a woman he encountered on the Esplanade said she was sexually assaulted and thrown into the Charles River.
The man told troopers a 20-year-old student near Commonwealth Avenue and Deerfield Street said the attack took place just before 3 a.m.
The victim was no longer with the man when police arrived, according to official reports.
Procopio said officers used the contents of the woman’s purse, which was in the man’s possession, to identify the victim and report to her address.
Police said the victim refused medical attention and would not provide a description of the assailant.
Procopio said the alleged assault occurred as multiple agencies continue to investigate four linked sexual assaults in recent years — three that occurred near the Esplanade and one that occurred in South Boston.
