New Yorkers can eat, drink and now sleep while helping Mother Nature.
A mattress store that opened in Soho last year offers fully recyclable mattresses — and it doesn’t stop there. Everything in Keetsa, from fixtures to store chairs, was recycled from something, according to store manager Stephen Andrieux.
“The chairs were being thrown out from a company across the street,” Andrieux said. “We recycled them and put them into the store.”
Headboards and shelves were made from recycled lumber salvaged from New York buildings. And customers even have a chance to drink green — the store keeps green tea available for browsers.
Bed materials include organic cotton, bamboo, recycled steel coils and recycled memory foams.
“All these things are the different types of elements that make our mattresses greener,” Andrieux told Metro.
The mattresses themselves are meant to be New York-friendly, and can be compressed into small boxes.
Not only does it reduce their carbon footprint, Andrieux said, but also, “Customers can take a mattress out of our store and put it in a cab.”
The San Francisco-based company boasts just one store in the city so far, but the mattresses are available at Bronx and Brooklyn retailers.
Green tips
Here are some other ways to keep your home eco-friendly:
» Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.
» Buy bleach-free toilet paper.
» Instead of paper towels, cut up your old T-shirts and use those instead.
» Turn off all electronics every night before you hit the sack.
» Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Do the same for your morning coffee by bringing the same cup every day to your favorite coffee shop.
