Edward Prakapas and his longtime friend Daniel McCarthy, both of South Boston, split a winning $2 million Powerball prize from the Dec. 28 drawing, according to the State Lottery.
After taxes, the two received a check for $1.4 million, which they will split evenly, according to the Lottery. Prakapas, a retired, married grandfather of five, and McCarthy wagered an extra dollar on their ticket, which was just shy of winning the full $40 million jackpot, the Lottery said.
The extra dollar jacked up their prize from $1 million to $2 million.
Another $1 million winning ticket was sold in Berkley, and the winner has not yet claimed the prize.
Prakapas and McCarthy played their winning ticket at Jimmy’s Korner, on P Street in South Boston. The store will receive $20,000 for the sale. In a photo provided by the Lottery, Prakapas wore a Red Sox hat and McCarthy wore a Patriots hat, while both gave a thumbs up.
