Heavy rain washed out a retaining wall near South Street on Monday, forcing eight residents from their homes and forcing a handful of businesses to close down.
The partial wall collapse happened about 8 p.m. Monday on 8th Street between South and Bainbridge Streets, CBS Philly reports. The wall toppled when rain washed away dirt beneath it.
Several businesses in the area will not be able to open Tuesday as the area around the collapsed wall is examined and stabilized. Officials were also to inspect 8th Street.
