Speaker targets parking in city speech

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn vowed to save New Yorkers from the rigors of parking in 2011.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn vowed to save New Yorkers from the rigors of parking in 2011.

In yesterday’s State of the City, she proposed creating an interactive map to show open parking spots and letting streets miss a day of alternate-side parking — saving drivers hours of sitting in their cars.

Also, she proposed banning cops from ticketing drivers while they pay a Muni-Meter. “Almost every New Yorker has a story about getting tickets they clearly didn’t deserve,” Quinn said.

Ticket agents would be required to cancel the parking ticket if the drivers show a receipt.

Quinn also addressed New York’s 9 percent unemployment rate and budget woes. “We need to take a hard look at our finances,” she said.
