A former state representative from Everett was sentenced to federal prison for committing voter fraud.

Stephen Smith, 57, was sentenced Tuesday to four months in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. He pleaded guilty in December to two counts of deprivation of rights under color of law. Under his plea agreement, he had to resign his position this year and cannot seek re-election for five years.

Smith cast invalid absentee ballots to support his election, authorities said.

He submitted the absentee ballots for people who were either ineligible to vote or were otherwise unaware of ballots being cast in their names.
