Suspect in Holmesburg double shooting had lived at victim's house for three months

Police officially charged James Mears, 25, last night with the murder of two women in a Holmesburg house - both of whom were shot once in the head.

Mears allegedly shot to death Dollie Evans, 67, and Ruby Thomas, 57 on Saturday around 5:30 p.m.

Mears had reportedly been living at Evans' home on the 4700 block of Vista Street for three months. She gave him a place to stay after he left jail, reports say.

Police received a call on Saturday of shots fired and discovered Evans dead on the living room couch, and Thomas dead in a second-floor bedroom.

Mears is believed to have plotted to steal $500 from Evans and shot her when she fought back, then slain Thomas because she was a witness, the Daily News reported.

Mears had a rap sheet including a 2010 arrest for gun possession leading to an 11 and a half to 23 month sentence. He served 10 months and was released in 2012. He violated parole two months after leaving jail when he was arrested twice, for gun possession and receiving stolen property.

Mears was then sentenced in January 2013 to another 11 and a half to 23 months for violating parole plus nine months for the new gun charge. He reportedly served was released three months ago and moved in with Evans, who knew him from the neighborhood.
