A South Philly man with a long rap sheet has been identified as the suspect who fired at officers this morning in Tacony and was killed when they returned fire.
David Ellis, 29, of the 2900 block of South Bouvier Street in South Philadelphia, reportedly fired a .32 caliber revolver at officer Stephen Korpalski, grazing the side of his head, just before 1 a.m. this morning in Tacony.
Korpalski and his partner were responding to reports of a man with a gun on the 6400 block of Ditman Street, police said.
When they tried to stop Ellis, he reportedly fired at them, striking Korpalski.
Korpalski, his partner and other officers responding to the scene returned fire.
Ellis was transported to Aria-Torresdale Hospital in Frankford and was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.
Korpalski was brought to Albert Einstein Medical Center for treatment and was in stable condition. He was released from the hospital and was recovering with his family earlier today.
Police said Ellis has a history of involvement with law enforcement dating back to 2000. Court records from Ellis' past were not immediately available.
