Talk Like a Pirate Day: Local Businesses Getting in on the Fun

Today is National Talk Like a Pirate Day, and several local businesses are getting in on the fun.

Rita’s Water Ice
at 15th and Spruce is offering a 50 cent discount to patrons who order
in pirate-speak and an additional 50 cents off to those who come
in costume.

Rum Bar at 20th and Walnut streets is offering a free sample of DonQ and rum specials to patrons who dress or talk like a pirate tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Independence Seaport Museum kicked off its own Pirate Week Saturday with pirate lectures and deck tours and held a mock pirate skirmish yesterday in which Philadelphia’s 1901 tall ship Gazela fought an assortment of battleships and “shooters” from the Penn’s Landing pier. The museum will be offering pirate sails on the Summer Wind through Saturday.

Talk Like a Pirate Day originated in 1995 as a joke between two friends in Oregon and took off in 2002, when Dave Barry of the Miami Herald wrote a column extolling the holiday.
