A teenager was nearly stabbed to death Friday night in a vicious assault while walking home through McCarren Park on the Williamsburg-Greenpoint border.

Brooklyn prosecutors told Metro yesterday they charged two people with attempted murder and gang assault. Officials said they followed two brothers on their way home through the park, slashing the younger one, 16, repeatedly with a gravity knife.

A Brooklyn district attorney’s office spokesman told Metro that around 9:20 p.m. Friday, two brothers were walking near Driggs and Union Avenues.

Argenis Zarzuela, 18, Seth Martinez, 16, and an unnamed minor, approached the two and said something to them about it being gang territory, according to the D.A.’s office.

The two brothers kept walking, but the three allegedly hit the younger brother in the face with a brick, then threw him to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked him in his face, head and body.

They also repeatedly slashed him in the neck and back, according to the D.A.’s office.

Zarzuela and Martinez were charged with attempted murder, gang assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing, according to the D.A. The D.A. did not provide information on the third, a minor.

Geoffrey Croft, of parks advocacy group NYC Park Advocates and who first reported the crime, said more officers should be stationed at and around the park. “They need more enforcement,” he said.

The NYPD did not respond to requests for comment, and the Parks Department declined comment.

Block away from McCarren Park pool

The incident does not appear to be connected to the recently reopened and problem-plagued McCarren Pool, which reopened this summer after a 28-year shutdown.

But the alleged stabbing did happen about a block away. The pool has been the setting for several assault charges since opening in June, including an attack on a lifeguard.

Metro reported Monday that security at the pool includes pat downs, weapon checks and bag and bathing suit searches.
