Visitors at the Museum of Modern Art were in for a surprise Saturday when they stumbled upon actress Tilda Swinton sleeping in a glass box as part of an art installation.
The unannounced appearance was part of a performance piece called “The Maybe,” which debuted in 1995 in London. Gothamist reports that the Oscar-winner had been in talks with MoMA for the past seven years to bring it back.
Swinton will appear several more times throughout the year, but even museum staff members don’t know when.
“Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and in real — shared — time,” the museum said in a statement. “Now we see it, now we don’t.”
