Holiday cheer will come to some needy children in New York City on Dec. 14when Metro, Toys for Tots and The Partnership for the Homeless team up to pass out gifts that have been collected as part of Tony’s Metro Magic holiday toy drive.

The annual event is done with Toys for Tots and the U.S. Marines, and until this year was overseen by Tony Metcalf, Metro’s beloved editor-in-chief. He passed away in June from colon cancer at age 50. The event has been renamed as a tribute to him and how much he loved the toy drive.

Tony’s Metro Magic stories will continue to run in the paper through the rest of November and up until the gifts are delivered in December. There is still time to purchase gifts that will be passed out to needy children living in city shelters. The Metro office is starting to fill with gifts from our readers, but there are still many needy children who don’t have any gifts for the holidays.

“I just wanted to givea shout out to Metro and the Marines for doing a wonderful thing at the holidays,” wrote a reader who bought five gifts for Tony’s Metro Magic. “Keep up the great work. I hope the children have a merry Christmas.”

This season, we hope you remember that one gift can make a big difference in the life of a child who is spending the holidays in a homeless shelter or in a safe house.
