Saying they now have “conflicting information,” Boston police and the Suffolk County district attorney’s office have postponed the arraignment of an Allston woman police initially arrested for thefatal weekend crashand death of a young Brookline couple.
Authorities said Tuesday afternoon that the investigation is still active and that the identity of the driver of the suspect car is still the primary focus of their probe.
“Because interviews through the past 48 hours have yielded certain conflicting information, police and prosecutors have agreed that the investigation would be best served by postponing any arraignmentuntil further canvassing and evidentiary analysis are complete,” the Suffolk district attorney’s office said.
Boston police arrested Ghuzlan Alghazali, 26, overnight and on Tuesday morning the district attorney’s office said that she was to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on various charges including motor vehicle homicide.
A Boston police spokesman said they had no new information. A spokesman for the district attorney’s office said Alghazali was released from custody without charges.
Her, Attorney John Seed, said she was held in custody overnight and for most of Tuesday before being released after 2 p.m. He said her husband was also brought in for questioning, but he was also released.
“They’re terribly upset at what happened, that two young innocent lives were lost,” Seed said. “That’s something they’re not going to get over and I don’t know how you could after seeing what they saw and being involved in that.”
Seed would not say what the couple told police and who was driving the suspect car that allegedly caused the crash. He said the couple has four young children under 10 years old and they are “well aware” that the case if far from over.
Jack Lanzillotti, 28, and his girlfriend Jessica Campbell, 27, both of Brookline, were pedestrians walking near Beacon and Fairfield streets at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when the crash occurred. The impact sent one of the cars into the couple, police said.
Lanzillotti worked for the Red Sox for seven years, most recently as manager ofRed Sox Productions/Game Operations. He won an Emmy for his work.
“Jack has been an important, respected, and beloved member of our organization for the past seven years,” Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino said in a statement. “His poise under pressure and good-humored manner helped us deliver consistently outstanding results. We are all grief-stricken, and we send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Jack’s and Jessica’s families.”
Campbell worked a senior analyst for Kantar Retail, the company said. She was responsible forresearch and insights on the three major U.S. chain drug retailers, according to the company’s website.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jessica Campbell,” the company said in a statement. “Her passion for life, professionalism, and friendship will be sorely missed. We extend our deep condolences to her family during this difficult time.”
The district attorney’s office said they notified the families of the change.
“We’ve advised the Campbell and Lanzillotti families of this decision and assured them that every step we take in this probe is with the intention of seeing justice done for them and their loved ones,” the Suffolk district attorney’s office said in a statement.
