Updated: Coast Guard joins search for missing diver off of Marblehead

The body of a 58-year-old man who went missing while out diving in the waters off of Marblehead was recovered Tuesday afternoon.

The search for the scuba diver in distress lasted for hours Tuesday. The search took place in the area of Satan’s Rock behind Children’s Island.

The Westfield man somehow drowned while out scallop diving with two other men, according the Essex district attorney’s office. Authorities did not identify the man. His body was recovered by the Massachusetts State Police dive team at about 2:30 p.m.

Authorities said the cause and manner of death is under investigation and that foul play is not suspected.

At about 10:30 a.m., the man’s family notified the Coast Guard that he was overdue, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard sent a rescue crewaboard a 29-foot small boat out of Gloucester and Air Station Cape Cod sent a search and rescue crew aboard aJayhawk helicopter.

Additionally, harbormaster boats from Marblehead and Salem and fire, police and rescue divers from Marblehead, Beverly, Salem and the state environmental police helped in the search.
